Harvest - develop next generation agriculture and livestock industries
Improving product quality and supply stability to become one of Japan’s leading spinach production areas
“Nishine spinach” is known for its high quality, winning the Emperor’s Cup at the 27th annual agriculture festival (gardening division) in 1988. Like “Ashiro Rindo”, it has become synonymous with the agriculture of Hachimantai City in terms of name recognition for the area.
Hachimantai City is expanding its agriculture sector and making efforts to support increased production while attracting and fostering younger generations to continue farming. Efforts to promote Hachimantai brands are underway, such as approaching large-scale supermarkets to arrange fixed daily shipments from groups of local farmers so as to improve quality and ensure supply.
Positive brand promotion leading to expansion of “rindo” (gentian) markets
Japan’s leading production center for rindo. The Floriculture Research and Development Center is working to strengthen the rindo brand through the development of original varieties and the instruction of cultivation techniques to farmers. Rindo has a strong Japanese image, and so we are conducting rindo cultivation exchanges with New Zealand and Chile while succeeding in our efforts to internationalize the brand through exports to Europe.
In the future, we aim to further develop new varieties and new demands for rindo. We are making special efforts to create flowers which can withstand the extreme heat of recent years as a means of expanding the industry.
Hachimantai-gyu beef and Du Zhong tea-fed pork: setting the table with our products.
The city is making efforts to strengthen the branding of these and other agricultural and livestock products. We are committed to improving the production quality of “Hachimantai-gyu” which comes from cattle born in the area and raised with great care on the region’s fertile grassy plains, and of “Du Zhong tea-fed pork” which is created by feeding pigs a strict diet of mash from locally grown tea. Rice and vegetable producers also are taking advantage of the expansive lands and ideal climate conditions of our area.
We are focusing on a recycling-based agriculture for livestock feeds and composts. These will provide agricultural opportunities in commerce, industry and tourism; local agricultural produce processing, marketing, and the development of specialty products.
